Who Review. Season 15.

Season 15 Verdict

After watching this season, I can see why people say this was a transitional season.

I liked the humour, and the darkness of these stories. I loved Leela. She was the highlight of this season. Forget Sarah Jane, it’s all about Leela. I liked Tom Baker’s Doctor, until the Invasion of Time and then my opinion of him dropped again. I liked the threat of the aliens, rather than the visualisation of them. I didn’t realise K9 made his debut in this season, and I thought he added something. Not sure if that was a positive or negative. I liked the first 3 stories, but I felt some of the episodes were not as good as others. The Invasion of Time was a dud. I don’t think we need to see the Time Lords this often. Especially when they have narrow corridors, with chairs that clutter them. The Sunmakers was my favourite from season 15. I thought it was fun. I probably wouldn’t be in a hurry to watch it again, but it surprised me in a good way.

Who Review. The Invasion of Time.

Ep. 1

Is that a new dress for Leela or has it been bleached?

She’s learnt how to work the Tardis then

Those are some funky boots

These are the Time Lords, and Gallifrey?

There’s a swimming pool in the TARDIS

I’m lost here

Rasselon, matrix, council – president of –

Ep. 2

The design and costumes look good

Leela is the enemy now

‘Even the sonic screwdriver won’t get me out of this one’ said to the camera

Who is Borussa the one in aubergine robes?

Why would Leela trust the Doctor now?

She’s been locked out of the TARDIS

Why is the Doctor –

I don’t understand

What is K9 doing

Who is invading them?

That laugh by Tom Baker was frightening

Ep. 3

What are they, crackly tin foil?

Leela still trusts the Doctor

What are those green – chairs? in the corridors

The Vardans

Andred

A barbiran garden

Why must we continue to be reminded that Leela is a savage

First time outside of the citadel

Rodan being given some harsh reality. What a strange character to introduce to the story

The Doctor and those fucking jelly babies comic moments

Ep. 4

I don’t understand why the Doctor is behaving this way

Tom Baker has been fantastic in this

I like this conversation in the Tardis between the Doctor and Andred

Banishing Leela was part of the plan

Leela seems like she’s enjoying herself

It’s strange those she are with outside of the citadel are Gallifreyan but are so different to the those we have seen inside

Don’t these invaders suspect the Doctor is onto them

The plan is to rescue the Doctor, isn’t it something that Leela has so much trust in the Doctor?

Hasn’t Leela been given a TARDIS key? That’s such a big thing in New Who

The voice of the leader Vardan is interesting

The Sontarans?

Ep. 5

These Time Lords always give the impression that they are up to something

‘Then you should remember your training in detachment’ ‘I’d rather care’

Ep. 6

This TARDIS interior looks naff

This seems like a very good story for a regeneration

If this is an old Tardis, what on earth do the new ones look like

There’s been plenty of people tramping about in the TARDIS in this story

That Sontaran mask looks – ? It looks terrible

I wonder which parts of the TARDIS previous companions liked and made their own corner

Verdict

I spent a lot of this story confused by what was happening. I did enjoy the final two episodes, which were set in the TARDIS. Of course, it didn’t look, or feel, like the TARDIS at all.

Tom Baker was great. But. It felt like he was enjoying himself, like the line between Tom Baker the actor and Tom Baker as the Doctor character blurred, and I don’t know how much worse this story would have been if Tom Baker hadn’t been up for this. I said in my reaction, he had been playing this character for a while at this point and I don’t know how his ego was because Tom Baker is front and centre in every scene. It’s credit to Louise Jameson that she manages to be great, even when the writing for her character is suspect.

The Sontarans were difficult to understand at times. I liked the scenes where they were chasing the Doctor through the TARDIS. They can be menacing.

There seems to be a lot of padding to this story, but it wasn’t too slow that I got bored.  Well, emphasis on the too.

What the fuck that ending with Leela was, I don’t know. The Doctor bringing another box out with K9 Mark 2 made me hate him. What kind of goodbye was that?

3.5/5

Who Review. Underworld.

Ep. 1

Not another ship

Time Lords

Eric looks like he’s going to be a problem

What just happened to Leela?

These guys have been regenerating for years

Hundred thousand years

The quest is the quest

That elderly gentleman looks knackered

Gets them out of danger then Jackson wants them to go back into it

JNT was already working on Doctor Who at this point?  He must have been doing the job for years

Ep. 2

It makes me wonder what it was for Tom Baker to have 7 years as the Doctor, having a regular job, going into work and acting with wobbly ship sets, quarries, Daleks and people in costumes

I don’t think an actor would do it for that long now

Or would be allowed to, unless they were liked by all and Who fans are pretty divided at the moment

Not much for Leela to do yet

Is the music trying to drum up excitement?

This story feels so muted

Is the Doctor looking for the crew

Or a way of stopping the gas?

Ep. 3

Blows and sucks were the only two words I heard there

What is that ship called – peace ebernee

‘No time? Don’t say that to me! I’m a Time Lord’

‘Don’t worry, he has saved many fathers’

Some good dialogue

K9 is so noisy

What is that, elevator music?

Taking the piss, surely

Is this the peace ebernee ship then

Those costumes of the guards are interesting

Why is the Doctor not running with everyone?

Eric having fun after years in space

‘We can make your brain boil inside your skull’ Lovely

Ep.4

It’s a trick

What is going on

The crew will leave without the Doctor and Leela and now they’ve got shot of K9 too

Grenades

The Doctor is going to give the cylinders back so they can blow themselves up

The Doctor has been very patient and reassuring in this story

Jackson is happy to have his people blown to bits because of some added weight

Fuck sake

Verdict

Well, thankfully the last 2 episodes of this story were not as bad as the first 2, otherwise I would have been sent to sleep. A standard Who adventure. There were a lot of static moments, where the story seemed to stall and got stuck. I liked how Baker’s Doctor was more reserved. Yes, the CSO was crap and I tried to ignore it.

No idea who the villain of the piece was and what will happen to the Minyans now?

Who Review. The Sun Makers

Ep. 1

Taxes and not being able to make ends meet. Very relatable

Suicide

I like that we’re starting to see more women characters in Doctor Who

This is all very violent

Ep.2

Ew, dirty fingernails

‘Going for a little hop, good for the circulation,’

Is that man erect?

The Collector looks like he’s doing his work with his nose

I don’t know what to make of Richard Leech as Gatherer Hade, certainly an interesting character

Ep. 3

Oh yes, leave Leela. Well done lads

Bloody hell, Leela can make some noise. Gave me a start

‘Two days public holiday, without pay’

I do like what the Gatherer is wearing. I would wear that

‘This is the moment I get a real feeling of job satisfaction,’

He reminds me of Sil

Ep. 4

Did K9 miss a cue there?

Is hypnotising a Time Lord trait? That’s what the Master does

He’s disappeared in a hole in his chair

Verdict

I feel this could be a story you have on in the background, not needing to pay too much attention to it. I liked the dialogue on work, pay, capitalism, the economy and of The Company. On a wider scale of an entire planet. Although I suppose some companies do stretch across the world now. The Collector and the Gatherer were my two favourite characters. I think some of the secondary characters underwent a transformation of sorts. Especially Cordo. I liked Veet. I wonder what happened to Marn.

4/5

Who Review. Image of the Fendahl

Ep. 1

I recognise these actors, handsome people

Ah big wooden panelled houses, very Doctor Who

It’s nice to see the outside on Who again

The skull is glowing

K9 is broken already

Are we going to Earth?

‘No, I was sent by the council’

That security man is from EastEnders, was I should say

‘I shall kill him’ ‘No, you’ll upset the dog’

I don’t think the Doctor likes Leela’s need for violence

Leela and the Doctor getting split up, you can bet on that

Ep. 2

Does Leela not feel the cold? She’s like me, running around in a t-shirt in the winter

Those mugs are a strange design

Mitchell security man. Thea the woman

Bloody hell

‘Thea we are trapped’ That’s some enunciation

There’s a coven, are there witches?

In through the front door

Max is a creepy man, knew you couldn’t trust him

Casually strolling through a house, munching on jelly bellies. Bellies? Babies.

Ep. 3

Ah, Leela saves the Doctor

At least that doesn’t turn into an icky new Who romantic moment

John / gran

A lot of timey wimey stuff

At least this Doctor is polite enough to say sorry when he starts shouting at Leela, I hadn’t noticed that before

‘Not a moment too soon,’ ‘No, moment too late,’

Ep. 4

That’s quite a look Thea has transformed into

Ew

Is that scarf different to his usual one?

Don’t look at the eyes

I’m not sure how much of a threat the Fendahl posed at the end

Have they changed clothes?

Verdict

Third story into season 15 and I finally think I have seen a story which holds up well across all 4 of its episodes. There were a lot of handsome actors in this story. I thought Wanda Ventham, who played Thea, did a good job. I’m still bemused by Edward Arthur playing Adam Colby and the way he spoke. Did Adam and Thea have a thing going on? Also Dr. Fendelman called Adam Colby Adam and Colby at different parts of the story? I couldn’t keep up. Wouldn’t you have a preferred name for someone?

I’m not sure I understood parts of this story, but then I never do. I liked the dialogue, the relationship between this Doctor and Leela and the scenes of tramping through a foggy woodland because that’s so Doctor Who.
